The phrase "crossing the river" is a translation of the Khmer phrase for giving birth, but to the author the phrase also comes to mean both drowning in grief after losing her son and ultimately being able to let him go by literally scattering his ashes above the river they loved to watch together. As a journalist, the author heals herself through the power of the stories she writes about real people going through transformative experience of loss which bear upon some aspect of her own grief journey. Although this book will be especially helpful to parents grieving the death of a child, it is by no means so limited in scope.
