Description

Dr. Neil Fiore has even developed his own program to help people implement the strategies from the book. Immediately, a few things change. Having a schedule allows you to see where your time goes, reducing feelings of guilt and self-criticism. Work becomes less overwhelming because you see clearly that you do not have as much time for work as you may have thought until now – in-between fixed appointments, sleep, eating, commuting, and play, there’s really only so much time left in a day to get some quality work done. It’s almost like work becomes a kind of rare commodity, making it more attractive for you – you’ll find yourself wanting to work more.

The reason is our (childhood) programming and conditioning. Maybe your parents always demanded perfection and good grades from you. And if you didn’t deliver, you got harshly criticized. As a result, many tasks in your life today bring up the fear of disappointing your parents. So you decide to begin an important work project, but you feel that fear bubbling up from your unconscious mind. Then, to relieve the fear, you procrastinate. It has reminded me of the advice which a tutor at uni gave me about exam revision.I thought his advice was silly. My method was to wake up in the morning thinking that I would do 16 hours of solid revision. By the end of the day I would have distracted myself many times and I would have achieved about 5 hours of revision. My tutor advised me to revise in the morning and take the afternoon off and then revise in the evening. It seemed like madness. When I tried putting his advice into practise it actually worked. I would revise efficiently in the morning then take the afternoon off and enjoy myself and then I would happily start revising in the evening and manage 3 or 4 hours of revision. So that was about 9 hours of productive revision. This advice got me through my exams. ETA: I read it in a rush, which perhaps helped because I just skipped any annoying examples or verbose parts. I thought several of his ideas were original and fit me well. So often, because I haven't done what I "Should" do, I don't let myself do what I want to do either. So I end up doing unproductive things, etc. Anyone faced with that "inner rebel" that rebukes your best plans, will find helpful concrete ideas here. He also illuminated how we take things we want to do and turn them into chores via our self-talk. I love the idea of committing to "play" and then setting 30 mintues prior to it for the work you're avoiding. Also the focus on starting instead of finishing. I'm always telling myself, I have to finish *it* by Friday, by tomorrow, instead of just focusing on when will I start again...Not only will doing this allow you to stay focused, it also gives you a chance to evaluate these tasks again later. At the end of your day, take a look at that day’s list and ask yourself for all items on it: is this really that important? Do I have to do this at all? I must finish." Don't think about that, it's too overwhelming and far off. Instead, think about how to get started on one little piece, any little piece. And forget worrying about the perfect starting point, just start somewhere. Start at the next possible opportunity. Keep starting more and more little pieces, and eventually they'll add up to progress. I think everyone should read this but especially those living with ADHD or chronic procrastination. P.S. The Now Habit Summary - Four Minute Books The Now Habit Summary - Four Minute Books

Focus on “when is the next time I can start?” and keep taking 1 small step at a time. Don’t try to finish an entire project, or work non-stop for 3 hours. Just aim for just 30 minutes of quality, focused work. Instead of creating a week full of work interspersed with play and leisure, you create a week full of play and leisure interspersed with work. Your calendar changes from a list of unrealistic and overwhelming expectations to a place for fun stuff and a record of your achievements. This goes hand in hand with the previous guideline. Don’t worry about finishing a project, writing an entire chapter of your book, completing your income tax, or even just working continuously for hours on end. It is rare to find a book that translates academically sound research into wise and helpful advice.”I’m a productivity coach ready to help another 10.000 men and women across the world work less, achieve more, and live fulfilling, abundant lives without distractions, fear, or procrastination getting in the way.

ex) I thought I can solve 5 math problems in 30min, but actually I needed 1hour. And I have to finish it today. Most habitual procrastinators are aware of their tendencies, but can’t break free from them no matter how hard they try. Why is that? What should I do then? reduce my playtime or just let it go even if I only finished 2 problems in 30min and do it tomorrow…? but then I won’t be finished by test.. Procrastination: “A mechanism for coping with the anxiety associated with starting or completing any task or decision”Additionally, most self-help books could be easily blog posts. They have just been stretched with mind-numbing repetitions and pointless anecdotes to justify the advance paid out to the author. And so is the case with this book.
